The Ilsley Residence - Bamboo
and Falling Water
The
Ilsley’s requested a seamless integration of their
Asian influenced interior decoration and the backyard space,
which was small and barren. New bamboo floors and an etched
glass room divider with a bamboo motif provided the inspiration
for lush stands of bamboo and twin water features. A dramatic
new deck provides sweeping entrance into the garden as well
as entertainment space. The basic circle geometry of the
design encourages circulation past the plantings and toward
the water features. A new backdoor entrance, unique gate
conception, perennial beds, stone paths, and space for the
owner’s prized Japanese maple collection produced additional
design challenges for a small space. The bamboo selections
demanded extensive research.

The Nunn Residence - Blending Natives with Artiface
Islands
of plantings surrounded by meandering paths, and judicious
use of native plants inspired this eclectic design. While part
of this large lot remains wooded, the substantial turf area
became a complex of paths surrounding island beds of azaleas,
rhododendrons, evergreens, ornamental grasses, and boulders.
The woods showcase spectacular native plants such as Salmonberry,
Oceanspray, Red Flowering Currant, Mahonia, and Huckleberry.
Added features include an eight hundred square foot concrete
patio, stamped and stained, a new, larger deck at ground level,
and a custom designed fence and trellis combination (support
for Wisteria and Climbing Hydrangea).
Every direction you may take on the paths leads to a view
point. The design intent makes use of as much garden space
as possible, yet leaving a spacious feeling to enjoy the plant
combinations and the hardscape elements, and the native woods.

The
D’Annunzio Residence - Grasses, Pool, and Flagstone
in Three Seasons
This
site proposed several challenges, not the least were a sloping
contour towards the house and very poor drainage. The front
yard lawn was perpetually soaked and muddy. Along with these
problems was an overgrown rhododendron in front of the living
room window that darkened the room. The yard was a monotone
of dreary green with no focal points beyond a mature ornamental
cherry tree that could not be seen from the house. A dry pond
coated with black Mexican beach pebbles resolved the drainage
problem, and then a flagstone path cuts through the pond. Lining
the pond are three season interest plants: Japanese Blood Grass,
Karl Foerster grass, Red Vein Enkianthus, a Full Moon Maple,
Dwarf Winged Euonymus, Elijah Blue Fescue, and Hakonechloa.
Mountain Laurel grows randomly, and the North facing window
overlooks a carpet of Azaleas. Dramatic focal points have been
added, with color and texure.
